Driving in Toronto

Driving in Toronto can be challenging, especially during morning and evening rush hour periods. Highway 401 through the Greater Toronto Area is the busiest highway in Canada.

Car Rentals

Cars can be rented at Pearson International Airport upon your arrival. More information and links to the rental car providers located at the airport.

Before you set out, it's a good idea to get an idea of what the traffic will be like on your journey. Toronto has significant rush hour slow-downs like most major cities, and in October the weather can play a significant role in slowing your travel time and increasinge the risks of driving in potentially challenging conditions caused by the weather.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation maintains a series of traffic cameras that can show you live images of traffic conditions along your highway route through Toronto.

Driving Regulations

Canada is like the United States, in that we drive on the right-hand side of the road. Traffic laws are similar to most US States. Speed limits in the city are usually 50-60 kmh. Highway speed limits range from 80 kmh to 100 kmh. Speed enforcement is strict, and drivers can be subject to roadside vehicle seizure, license suspensions and fines up to $10,000 CAD. Right-hand turns are permitted at red lights at most intersections. Watch for signs prohibiting right hand turns on red.

The Ontario Driver's Handbook is available online if you want to brush up before you take to the road.

There is a Zero Tolerance policy with regard to Drinking and Driving, with penalties including license suspension, fines and jail.
